This is a third-person shooter in which players assume the role of Sam Fisher, a Special Forces operative who must thwart a plot aimed at initiating global conflict. Players use pistols, knives, mines, and grenades to kill enemy soldiers during various missions. Night-vision goggles can also be used to perform stealth combat moves, such as sneaking up behind enemies to break their necks; defeated enemies generally grunt or cry out in pain before collapsing to the ground. Throughout the game, some characters' dialogue contain mildly suggestive jokes or innuendo (e.g., "You wanna get a peek up this girls skirt . . ." and "Give our boys a hand, and they'll give you wood."). The dialogue also contains a few drug references (". . . Noriega used to smuggle his drug money out of the country" and "Philippine drug dealers"). The words "sh*t" and "b*tch" can be heard in dialogue.
