This is an adventure role-playing game in which players follow the stories of Mario, Luigi, and Bowser Jr. in a fantasy kingdom. Players can customize squads of minions to fight off various enemies (e.g., bugs, meat creatures, koopas) in group battles. Players select various attack moves from a menu and view "cartoony" fight sequences against enemies; Mario and Luigi are sometimes seen stomping on characters' heads, whacking enemies with mallets, and pelting creatures with fireballs and turtle shells. In one scene, a tiny worm emits flatulence (i.e., a yellow cloud) in a character's face to elude being captured.
